MyFoodapedia Serves up Nutritional Stats on Hundreds of Foods [Nutrition]

MyFoodapedia Serves up Nutritional Stats on Hundreds of Foods [Nutrition]: From Lifehacker
"If you need a quick rundown on the nutritional content of a particular food, MyFoodapedia is a comprehensive food database brought to you by the USDA Center for Nutrition.
Put the food you're searching for in the search box and MyFoodapedia will give you a list of potential matches to choose from, it will even show you recipes that commonly include the said ingredient. From there you can choose the amount of the food, any condiments or add-ons you'll be using, and you'll get the stats on the food. It's a simple interface and it doesn't dive into the nuances of caloric intake like simple and complex carbohydrates, but for a quick look up it's snappy and wide reaching.
Have a favorite tool for looking up or tracking nutritional data? Let's hear about it in the comments.

Airport Security Update

Airport Security Update: From GovGab
man in an airport talking to customs agents"Surely you heard the news last week that a person on board a flight to Detroit set off a device on the plane. Thanks to the heroic actions of the crew and passengers, he was subdued and the plane landed safely. That’s what I call saving Christmas.
When incidents like this happen on planes, usually a change in airport security follows. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued some guidance to the public about this incident and how it will affect you.
The TSA says that they will implement additional screening measures including explosive detection dogs, law enforcement officers, gate screening, and other measures.
But what does all that mean to you? Right now, security checkpoint requirements remain the same for departures from U.S. airports.
You don’t need to do anything differently, just remember to pack well to get through the line faster, follow the liquid rules and keep prohibited items at home.
You may notice additional security measures at the airport, and you know that additional security measures mean it just might take more time to get through the security line. Be sure to give yourself even a little more extra time to get to your flight."

Home Buyer Tax Credit Extended

Home Buyer Tax Credit Extended: From GovGab:
Home Buyer Picture"Back in October, Jess asked Gov Gab readers what they thought about Congress expanding the first-time home buyer tax credit.
If you remember, the first-time home buyer tax credit gave up to $8,000
to a buyer who has not owned a primary residence during the three years
up to the date of home purchase. The credit was due to end this month.

Congress passed the Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009 which extends
the deadline for qualifying home purchases from Nov. 30, 2009, to April
30, 2010. The Internal Revenue Service web page
has posted details on the changes in the extension law and the big news
is that if you already own a home, you may be eligible for a tax credit
of up to $6,500.
The new law provides a “long-time resident” credit of up to $6,500
to others who do not qualify as “first-time home buyers.” To qualify
this way, a buyer must have owned and used the same home as a principal
or primary residence for at least five consecutive years of the
eight-year period ending on the date of purchase of a new home as a
primary residence.
The extension also permits a rise in income limits and other provisions. The IRS is the best resource to read about all the changes and what you will need to do to receive the credit.
What do you think of the Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009?"

    Privacy of the e-book?

Privacy of the e-book?: From Free Government Information:
"This year will probably be remembered (among other things!) as the year of the e-book-reader device hype. We've seen new Kindles, the B&N Nook, the FBReader, applications for book reading on iPhones and other handheld devices, and more. And, of course, there is the elephant-in-the-room of the Google book scanning project. (I find it so odd that so much of the popular press refers to the Google 'Library' when it is clearly a Google book store.)

It will be a while before we know if the digital age will turn into the end of sharable books (see: Welcome to the library. Say goodbye to the books), but we certainly should be tracking the development of the advantages and disadvantages of e-books and e-book readers.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is helping us track how these developments affect privacy:

EFF has created a first draft of our Buyer's Guide to E-Book Privacy. We've examined the privacy policies for the major e-readers on the market to determine what information they reserve the right to collect and share."
