    2010 National Book Festival

2010 National Book Festival: From GovGab: "Girls reading togetherMy mother encouraged my sisters and me, starting when we were very young, to be interested in books. I was a huge reader and I loved going to the public library. I am convinced that this early love of reading fostered an overall excitement and interest in learning, and paved the way for me to excel at school.

When it came to reading, my mom instinctively knew that if she wanted us to be good readers, she would have to be a good role model for us. Kids will never believe reading is fun if they don't see parents and other siblings reading; if they don't take trips to a library or bookstore; and if they don't see lots of books around the house. My mom made sure we had that kind of exposure to books.

Every year the Library of Congress sponsors the National Book Festival. The 2010 festival will be held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, September 25 from 10 am to 5:30 pm. The festival is a celebration of the joy of reading for all ages. It is free and open to the public.

The festival is an opportunity for visitors to meet and ask questions from some of the nation's best authors and illustrators. Here is the List
    of Authors
for this year’s festival. In addition to hearing your favorite author discuss his or her work, you
can get your books signed by the author!

In order to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the National Book Festival, Borders partnered with the Library of Congress by sponsoring a bookmark design contest to encourage children across the country to submit designs that demonstrated their love of reading. Here are the state winners.

My favorite author is Ray Bradbury. Who is your favorite author? What things do you do to encourage an interest in reading books in your children?

    National Take Back Initiative

National Take Back Initiative: From GovGab: "medicineYou know how it is. Kid #1 has a cough and a runny nose, so you pick up some cough medicine. Then Kid #2 gets a headache, so you pick up a children's strength pain killer. Then your sinuses start acting up so you pick up a decongestant.

By that point your medicine cabinet is bursting with pill bottles and boxes that have been opened, used once and then pushed to the back and forgotten, until you feel sick again.

But by then, some of the medicines will have expired.

Taking expired medicine could be dangerous to you, but if you toss the half used bottles in the garbage they could end up in the hands of people who would use them for illegal purposes.
To help solve that problem, the Drug Enforcement Administration is hosting a National Take Back Initiative this Saturday (9/25). You can anonymously drop off any prescription or over-the-counter medicines that you have cluttering up your medicine cabinets. The DEA will make sure the drugs are disposed of properly.

Any solid dose medicines are accepted: pills, tables, capsules, etc. Injectibles, needles and IV solutions are not part of this program and won't be accepted.

The DEA will be hosting take backs across the country and you can find one near you. The website is updates frequently as new sites are added so if you don't see one near you check back tomorrow and you might have better luck.

P.S. Have you heard about the GovGab birthday contest yet? If not, check it out! Your story could be published on our blog!

    Tokyo Year Zero

Tokyo Year Zero: From Book Group Buzz: "David Peace has lived and taught in Japan since 1994 and his understanding of Japanese society is on review in the 2007 book, Tokyo Year Zero. The novel takes place one year after the Japanese surrender to the Americans and all Japanese are asking themselves what is the point of society when you have “nothing to lose.”

The central character is Minami, an inspector in the 2nd Investigative Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. He lives in the legacy of the Second World War and the fact that people now live under the mantra that “no one is who they say they are.” His investigations are conducted under the very formal rules of hierarchy but he has survived. Or at least, until now. When several female bodies are discovered, Minami is assigned to one of the colder cases. While others honor themselves with success, he begins to dissemble with his team, his superiors, and his family.

This is a noir novel and that means things are not going to go well for Minami. The most amazing thing for readers will be his tenacity as a detective while every other aspect of his life is crumbling around him.

Peace does an outstanding job of propelling the narrative with a poetic style that is amazing to read. Readers who like this style will most likely also like Ken Bruen’s Jack Taylor series.

This is a dark and disturbing novel that shows a society totally out of control. The issues that are raised in the novel will propel your book discussion. I can almost guarantee its success with your group."

Happy Unmarried & Single Americans Week

Happy Unmarried & Single Americans Week: From GovGab: "young woman roaming in the fieldDid you know that the third week of September marks the celebration of Unmarried and Single Americans Week (September 19-25th)? I certainly didn’t. The observance was instituted in Ohio by the Buckeye Singles Council to recognize unmarried people and their contributions to society.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, which tracks the nation’s population trends, 96 million or about 43% of all American adults are unmarried. While the word "single" may bring to mind Beyonce singing to all the “Single Ladies”, the reality is that the unmarried population is diverse and can include people who have partners, are widowed, are single parents, the elderly, and even some grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. This observance celebrates all these variations and any in between.

For those who are able, this is the perfect time to develop new hobbies, visit museums, get a few stamps in your passport, or spend some time volunteering. It’s also important to take good care of yourself. Research reports show that marriage has a positive impact on health and well-being; so let’s prove that singles are just as healthy and take proactive steps to take extra care of ourselves too, by:

    • eating healthy foods
    • getting adequate amounts of sleep
    • exercising regularly
    • keeping appointments with your doctors (and maybe a spa day too)

What tips do you have for celebrating “Unmarried and Single Americans Week” this week (and beyond)?

Speaking of celebrating, help us celebrate GovGab.gov’s 3rd birthday by entering the contest to be a guest blogger.

    Dusty Book: Cocktails for Three

Dusty Book: Cocktails for Three: from the Shelf Renewal Blog: "Today, Sophie Kinsella’s Mini Shopaholic comes out. But did you know, she also writes chick lit (of the slightly less fluffy variety) as Madeline Wickham? (Well, perhaps you do know, since her last few Wickham books have blatantly advertised that fact on their covers. But when this Dusty Book came out, who knew?)

In Cocktails for Three, Candice, Maggie, and Roxanne are work pals who meet up in London for cocktails on the first of every month to discuss and dissect what’s going on in their lives. Roxanne

is having a heated affair, Maggie is a new mom with a mean mother-in-law and distant husband, and Candice has a guilty secret. When scheming Heather enters the mix, the friendships are tested.
