Opt out of Google Shared Endorsements

From Lifehacker:

Last week we mentioned that Google is updating its terms of service so it can use your name, face, reviews, and social networking activity (like +1s) in ads displayed to your friends or anyone else Google thinks would be influenced by your opinion. Good or bad, one thing is true: It's easy to opt out. Here's how.
  1. Just click here to go directly to the "Shared Endorsements" Google+ settings page.
  2. Uncheck the box labeled "Based upon my activity, Google may show my name and profile photo in shared endorsements that appear in ads." Click Save.
  3. You'll get a pop-up warning you that if you disable the feature, your friends won't see your recommendations. Click Continue.
That's all there is to it. If you don't want your name, photo, +1s, comments, or Google Reviews to be used in advertisements, you'll need to uncheck that box. You'll have to do this for every Google account you have (including Google Apps for your domain), and if you're a Google+ user, the box is enabled by default. Also remember, you can opt-out of all of Google's targeted ads as well.
On the bright side , Google has gone out of its way to tell alert people to the change and provide a direct link to opt out. That's more than can be said for Facebook, which made a similar change earlier this year, from which there's no opting out (aside from tweaking your privacy settings so no one sees what you like). To boot, Google's Shared Endorsements are (at least for now) only seen by people Google thinks would be influenced by your opinion, meaning your friends, people in your circles, or people who have circled you on Google+. It's actually a restrained way of approaching faux-word-of-mouth advertising, and there are arguments that this is actually a good thing—why wouldn't you want to hear what your friends thought of a band or restaurant before you download a new album or eat there?
On the other hand, there's something to be said for the notion that companies should be able to find ways to advertise without using the identities and likenesses of their users to do it, or even offer a users a method to pay for a useful service without constantly being marketed to or instead being forced to fight for their privacy. Similarly, not everyone likes or +1s a company or product in order to give it an endorsement—sometimes you do so for work, or to stay up to date on their products—not because you love them and want your friends to try them too. However you feel, you have until November 11th to opt out or stay opted in; that's when the new terms of service go into effect. Worst case, you could just change your profile picture to a photo of Eric Schmidt, like some people are doing.

Facebook

Lifehacker is reporting that Facebook is making everyone searchable.

"Facebook reminded people today that they're removing the "Who can look up your Timeline by name?" privacy setting, which means anyone can search for your profile on Facebook.
They started retiring this feature back in December of 2012, but according to Facebook's blog post today, the feature hasn't gone away for everyone just yet—but it will. That means your profile will be searchable again, so if you want to keep your information locked down, you should focus on what you post. It's very easy to limit your past posts so they don't show up to the public. We recommend giving all your privacy settings a once-over too, while you're at it. Hit the link to read more about the change.
Reminder: Finishing the Removal of an Old Search Setting | Facebook Newsroom"

To limit who can see your posts, go to the security settings (upper right hand corner, click on the little gear icon), then click on privacy settings.    Click on edit next to "Who can see my stuff  who can see your future posts".   Click on the level of security you want:

Who can see my stuff?

  • Close
Who can see your future posts?
You can manage the privacy of things you share by using the audience selector right where you post. This control remembers your selection so future posts will be shared with the same audience unless you change it.
    What's on your mind?

Your choices are Public, Friends, Friends except acquaintances, only me, custom, close friends, family.  "Public" means anyone can see it, "only me" would mean only you could see it.  Find the level you are comfortable with and you should be all set.  You can also change individual posts when you make them if you want.

Living Roots of Music
6:00 PM, Monday, October 14: The Living Roots of Music
Lauren Pelon traces the story of music and performs music from around the world on lute, guitar, lute-guitar, lyre, recorders, gemshorns, cornamuse, krummhorn, schreierpfeife, shawm, rackett, pennywhistles, concertina, ocarina, hurdy-gurdy, doucaine, Kiowa courting flute, synthesizers, electric wind instrument and MIDI-pedalboard.
Pelon is a vocalist as well, and her original songs and ancient ballads have been especially appealing to audiences. A Michigan reviewer wrote, "Lauren Pelon is a showpiece by virtue of her beautiful, fervent voice and her extraordinary talents on an assortment of unusual, but authentic instruments."
Ms. Pelon was the recipient of a 2001 “Artist of the Year” Award from Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, and 2010 Artist Initiative Award from the Minnesota State Arts Board. She studied the history of music and instrumentation both in America and overseas. She has performed in St. Petersburg, Russia at the Russian Institute for the History of the Arts, the Conservatory of Music in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and in concerts throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and China. In a recent overseas tour, Pelon presented concerts throughout New Zealand and Australia, and gave the 18th Annual Gordon Anderson Memorial Lecture at the University of New England, New South Wales. She has also performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras, on television specials and on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”
"I am fascinated by the interesting ways people of other cultures and different times have found to make music," says Pelon. "I especially enjoy doing these programs because they differ from ordinary concert performances. They offer not only an opportunity to listen to music, but also a way to think about how music has affected the lives of people all over the world -- from ancient times to our own modern day."
Pelon’s current program melds her own original compositions with her arrangements of music from ancient Greece, medieval Europe, and contemporary Africa and Middle East. William Kearns, American Music Research Center, Boulder, Colorado, called the program "captivating and awesome." A reviewer for The Canberra Times, Australia wrote, “Lauren Pelon has devised a unique evening of entertainment by combining a wide variety of music from many centuries... Her versatility with more than 25 instruments including voice is admirable...an experience made all the more pleasant by Pelon’s relaxed and warm presentation of the rare and unusual.”
This program is co-sponsored by Hackley Public Library and the Lakeshore Museum Center, and will be held at the Lakeshore Museum Center, 430 West Clay Ave.

In addition, logging in with your barcode and PIN to use services such as Overdrive, MeLCat, Mel Databases and other locally provided resources will also be temporarily unavailable during that time. STAFF PICKS

We like to read, and we like to share what we read! This is a list of recent favorites.

Stories for the Witching Hour

Halloween is the perfect time for stories that make you want to leave the lights on. Swedish writer John Ajvide Lindqvist, author of the best-selling Let the Right One In (adapted for the screen as Let Me In for U.S. audiences in 2007) offers a new collection of short stories, Let the Old Dreams Die. This new collection offers further proof that Lindqvist is an absolute master of uniting horror and humanity. A far cry from mindless gore, Lindqvist's tales weave philosophical questions surrounding our worst fears and greatest loves alongside the havoc of zombies and vampires. Fans will be delighted to find familiar characters from his most popular novels (Let the Right One In and Handling the Dead), yet Let the Old Dreams Die holds spine-tingling delights for the uninitiated as well.

Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses
Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses
By Kimmerer, Robin Wall
2003-03 - Oregon State University Press
9780870714993 Check Our Catalog

Living at the limits of our ordinary perception, mosses are a common but largely unnoticed element of the natural world. Gathering Moss is a beautifully written mix of science and personal reflection that invites readers to explore and learn from the elegantly simple lives of mosses.
Robin Wall Kimmerer's book is not an identification guide, nor is it a scientific treatise. Rather, it is a series of linked personal essays that will lead general readers and scientists alike to an understanding of how mosses live and how their lives are intertwined with the lives of countless other beings, from salmon and hummingbirds to redwoods and rednecks. Kimmerer clearly and artfully explains the biology of mosses, while at the same time reflecting on what these fascinating organisms have to teach us.
Drawing on her diverse experiences as a scientist, mother, teacher, and writer of Native American heritage, Kimmerer explains the stories of mosses in scientific terms as well as in the framework of indigenous ways of knowing. In her book, the natural history and cultural relationships of mosses become a powerful metaphor for ways of living in the world.
Gathering Moss will appeal to a wide range of readers, from bryologists to those interested in natural history and the environment, Native Americans, and contemporary nature and science writing. …More

"POWERFUL . . . A stirring defense of informed rationality. . . Rich in surprising information and beautiful writing."
*The Washington Post Book World

How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don't understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

Casting a wide net through history and culture, Sagan examines and authoritatively debunks such celebrated fallacies of the past as witchcraft, faith healing, demons, and UFOs. And yet, disturbingly, in today's so-called information age, pseudoscience is burgeoning with stories of alien abduction, channeling past lives, and communal hallucinations commanding growing attention and respect. As Sagan demonstrates with lucid eloquence, the siren song of unreason is not just a cultural wrong turn but a dangerous plunge into darkness that threatens our most basic freedoms.

While outwardly stunned with joy at his safe recovery, Caleb's parents and sister are privately scrambling to gather together the pieces of a shattered family. Joe Wilderness is a World War II orphan, a condition that he thinks excuses him from common morality. Cat burglar, card sharp, and Cockney wide boy, the last thing he wants is to get drafted. But in 1946 he finds himself in the Royal Air Force, facing a stretch in military prison . . . when along comes Lt Colonel Burne-Jones to tell him MI6 has better use for his talents.
