Search for the Westmoreland
6:00 PM, Tuesday, May 27

“On December 7, 1854, the Propeller Westmoreland foundered in Lake Michigan, near Sleeping Bear Dune, killing seventeen of her crew and passengers. Seventeen crew and passengers lived, however, and landed in lifeboats on the shore of Platte Bay. Soon after the passenger steamer’s sinking, rumors began circulating of $10,000 in gold coins in her safe and 280 barrels of whiskey in her hold. For the next 150 years the Westmoreland was one of the most sought after shipwrecks in all the Great Lakes, eluding salvagers, treasure-hunters and divers alike. Join author/shipwreck hunter Ross Richardson in exploring the legend, history and discovery of Lake Michigan's treasure shipwreck”. Brought to you through the generosity of the Friends of Hackley Library.

Book Review-Light Between Oceans

Recently, my book choices seem to be following a theme; they all take place around the time of the world wars:  The Dead in their Vaulted Arches, Life After Life, The Hollow City and now The Light Between Oceans
Tom has just returned home to Australia after his stint in the war. As many do, he carries a lot of guilt for what he has done and for the simple act of surviving when so many others did not.  He decides that the solitary life of a lighthouse keeper will help him heal.
He is posted to Janus Rock, a lighthouse on an island off the west coast.  When he arrives in the town that is closest to the light he meets a young woman named Isabelle.  They enjoy each other's company, but he has to report to the light and won't get a shore leave for a long time.  The supply boat comes every 3 months, and with the regular supplies comes a letter from Isabelle.  They start a long distance courtship and eventually marry.
Life so far from others has its own difficulties, but they cope with everything except Isabelle's three miscarriages.  She is devastated.  While tending the graves one day she hears a baby cry, and thinks it is just her imagination, until Tom calls her.  A boat has washed ashore with a dead man and a small baby.
What is the right thing to do when you don't know all the answers?  The story explores marriage, love, family ties, and honor.  What does it mean to love or to have compassion?
It is a very well written book with lots of things to think about and ponder over.

From one of Granta's Best Young British Novelists, a stunningly insightful, emotionally powerful new novel about an outsider haunted by an inescapable past: a story of loneliness and survival, guilt and loss, and the power of forgiveness. Jake Whyte is living on her own in an old farmhouse on a craggy British island, a place of ceaseless rains and battering winds. Her disobedient collie, Dog, and a flock of sheep are her sole companions, which is how she wanted it to be. But every few nights something--or someone--picks off one of the sheep and sounds a new deep pulse of terror. There are foxes in the woods, a strange boy and a strange man, rumors of an obscure, formidable beast. And there is also Jake's past--hidden thousands of miles away and years ago, held in the silences about her family and the scars that stripe her back--a past that threatens to break into the present. With exceptional artistry and empathy, All the Birds, Singing reveals an isolated life in all its struggles and stubborn hopes, unexpected beauty, and hard-won redemption. …More

Immersing readers in a panorama that stretches from Vermont to the tip of Cape Cod, Glass weaves together the lives of Kit, Jasper, Lucinda and, ultimately, Fenno McLeod, the beloved protagonist of Three Junes (now in his sixties).
