Book review-Sourdough by Robin Sloan

A few years ago I read Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore  by Robin Sloan.  It was a really fun book with a touch of magical realism, which I enjoy.  When I saw that Sloan had a second book out, I immediately placed a hold on it!
Sourdough is the story of Lois Clary, a 20 something engineer.  She recently moved from Michigan (!) to the San Francisco area to work at a robotics company.  The hours are brutal so she hasn't had time to make new friends-she barely has time to eat!  One day she comes home to find a flyer for a delivery service.  They only have 2 or 3 things on the menu, but she decides to give it a go.  The food is the ultimate comfort food, so she orders everyday and gets to know the brothers who are the owners and only employees.  They suddenly have to leave due to visa issues, so they give her their sourdough starter and give her some basic instructions on how to keep it alive.  And alive it is!  There aren't many books that have a food item as a main character, but this one sure does.
I enjoyed this book very much.  There's technology (the robots that Lois is working on), food, character growth, mystery, and that sourdough.  It is light on the surface, but looks at some heady issues as well, but overall a fun read.

Great Michigan Read LogoGreat MI Read author Kekla Magoon

6:00 pm, Tuesday, October 10

Welcome Kekla Magoon, co-author with Malcolm X's daughter Ilyasah Shabazz,  of X:A Novel.
This riveting and revealing novel follows the formative years of the man whose words and actions shook the world.
I am Malcolm.
I am my father's son. But to be my father's son means that they will always come for me.
They will always come for me, and I will always succumb.
Malcolm Little's parents have always told him that he can achieve anything, but from what he can tell, that's a pack of lies"after all, his father's been murdered, his mother's been taken away, and his dreams of becoming a lawyer have gotten him laughed out of school. There's no point in trying, he figures, and lured by the nightlife of Boston and New York, he escapes into a world of fancy suits, jazz, girls, and reefer. But Malcolm's efforts to leave the past behind lead him into increasingly dangerous territory. Deep down, he knows that the freedom he's found is only an illusion"and that he can't run forever.
X follows Malcolm from his childhood to his imprisonment for theft at age twenty, when he found the faith that would lead him to forge a new path and command a voice that still resonates today.
Kekla Magoon is the author of eight young adult novels, including The Rock and the River, How It Went Down, X: A Novel, and the Robyn Hoodlum Adventures series. She has received an NAACP Image Award, the John Steptoe New Talent Award, two Coretta Scott King Honors, The Walter Award Honor, and been long listed for the National Book Award. She also writes non-fiction on historical topics. Kekla conducts school and library visits nationwide and serves on the Writers' Council for the National Writing Project. Kekla holds a B.A. from Northwestern University and an M.F.A. in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, where she now serves on faculty. Visit her online at www.keklamagoon.com.
