Happy birthday US Census!: From Free Government Info: "Happy birthday United State Census! It was on this day in 1790(!) that the counting of the first US census was begun. Title 13 of the US Code
defines the census and the collection and publication of the census and other statistics required to make the federal govt run. So happy birthday census! You don't look a day over 200 :-)

The first enumeration began on Monday, August 2,1790, little more than a year after the inauguration of President Washington and shortly before the second session of the first Congress ended. The Congress assigned responsibility for the 1790 census to the marshals of the U.S. judicial districts under an act that, with minor modifications and extensions, governed census-taking through 1840. The law required that every household be visited and that completed census schedules be posted in ‘‘two of the most public places within [each jurisdiction], there to remain for the inspection of all concerned...’’ and that‘ ‘the aggregate amount of each description of persons’’ for every district be transmitted to the President. The six inquiries in 1790 called for the name of the head of the family and the number of persons in each household of the following descriptions: Free White males of 16 years and upward (to assess the country’s industrial and military potential), free White males under 16 years, free White females, all other free persons (by sex and color), and slaves.

Great Modern Short Novels:  "The Lost Horizon" by James Hilton was a very good sci-fi story, but the writing was somewhat ponderous, although I am sure it was considered modern when it was written.  The Steinbeck novel was absorbing and so easy to read!  Not sure what to make of the Saul Bellow. But a good collection.

Backlash by Aaron Allston:  The remarkable Star-warws novels latest series keeps the saga alive, and still relative and exciting 3 decades after the first movie.  Allston, as well as Golden and Demming, are masters of Star Wars lore.  And will continue to thrill a 3rd generation.

Story of Painting by Wendy Beckett:  A beautiful overview of painting, painters, and their works.  A simplified and interesting course in art history-very informative as well as pleasing to look at.

Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian:  Good-Interesting.

Easier than you think by Richard Carlson:  Really enjoyed.

Black Sand by William Cauntiz:  Very good read could hardly put it down.

Cleopatra Gold by William Cauntiz:  Suspenseful, didn't like as much as his other books.

National Farmers Market Week 2010: From GovGab: "I watched the movie Food, Inc last weekend and one of its messages was that if you want the healthiest food, you should strive to buy your produce locally. There's no better way to do that than shopping at your local farmers market. The Department of Agriculture is promoting farmers markets this week by deeming it National Farmers Market Week.
Farmers markets are a place where farmers can sell their products and develop a personal relationship with their buyers and the community. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service supports the development of the farmers markets and counts them through the National Farmers Market Directory. This year's count will be released this week and if it is anything like last year's, it will demonstrate the rapid growth of farmers markets in the U.S.
Between 1994, the first year of the count, and 2009 the number of farmers markets tripled and there was a 13 percent increase between 2008 and 2009. As of last year, there were 5,274 markets. A survey USDA conducted in 2005 found that farmers markets take in over one billion dollars annually, and 25 percent of the vendors surveyed said the market is their sole source of income. The USDA provides resources on starting and funding farmers markets and most importantly where to find your local ones.
