Preserving Your Digital Pictures: From GovGab: "Digital photography made it simple for us to easily share pictures with our friends and families, and store them in a way that didn't take up a lot of space.

But what happens if your computer crashes and your hard drive gets wiped clean? If you don't have your photos backed up, all those memories will be lost.

You can prevent that by using these tips from the Library of Congress to make sure your pictures stay safe.

1. Figure out where you currently store your digital pictures. Is it on your camera card, on the computer or somewhere online?
2. Select which pictures are the most important. If you don't have many you can back them all up, but if you have hundreds or even thousands, select the pictures that are the most meaningful to you for back up.
3. Organize the pictures in a way that makes sense. Store them in a separate folder, give them clear descriptions and identify important people in the picture.
4. Make two copies of your important pictures. You can keep one copy on your computer and then use either CDs, DVDs, an external hard drive or some other data storage system to keep a back up copy.
5. Once a year, check your photos to make sure you open all the files.

FactCheck.org published an article that says Republican claims that the new health care law is 'job-killing' is disingenuous and that the law will have only a minimal impact on jobs.


FactCheck.org is a nonpartisan, nonprofit project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, which seeks to 'reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.'


According to the article, House Republicans, in their report, 'Obamacare: A Budget-Busting, Job-Killing Health Care Law', misrepresent what the Congressional Budget Office has said about the law and also misrepresent a study that projects a 1.6 million job loss because of health care reform.

Glaucoma awareness month: From GovGab: "Are you at risk for glaucoma? If you’re over 60, or are an African American over age 40, or if you have a family history of glaucoma, you’re at risk.
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. It usually happens when the fluid pressure inside the eyes slowly rises, damaging the optic nerve. Often there are no symptoms at first, but an eye exam can detect it.
My dad had glaucoma for years, and was diligent about treating it. It’s a good thing he did, because once he got the diagnosis, he knew that he couldn’t reverse the condition, but he could slow its progression. His treatment wasn’t very difficult. He had to use eye drops every day, and he once had laser surgery on his eyes. Apparently that sounds worse than it was, because after surgery he was in the back yard making some repairs to the shed.
I have always felt that my eyesight is a precious gift. Something I never want to lose. For that reason, I get an eye exam and a glaucoma test every year. In fact, my test is scheduled for next week. Sometimes I can be lazy about making doctor appointments, but it helps to know that I’m in a risk group for glaucoma. It motivates me to get tested.

SAN DIEGO —The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) has announced its selection for the 2011 Reading List.

The Reading List annually recognizes the best books in eight genres: adrenaline (including suspense, thriller and adventure), fantasy, historical fiction, horror, mystery, romance, science fiction and women’s fiction. This year’s list includes novels that will please die-hard fans, as well as introduce new readers to the pleasures of genre fiction.

Losing your wallet or purse is stressful. Your money, credit cards, driver's license, all gone. Don't fret too much about tracking down contact information to close accounts and get things replaced. USA.gov puts the answers you need in one easy-to-find place.

1. Make a list of what you had in your wallet and tackle the important things first.
2. Immediately cancel all your credit and debit cards, letting your bank know that your wallet was lost or stolen. Request new copies of the card with a new account number.
3. File a police report so there is an official record.
4. Report a missing driver's license to your state's department of motor vehicles and request a new copy.
5. Alert the fraud departments of the major credit reporting companies. They will place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number, and you can request that they alert you before opening a line of credit in your name. (Equifax: 1-800-525-6285, Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742, Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289)
6. Request a replacement Social Security card and consider not carrying it in your wallet.
7. Contact either your company's HR department or your health insurance provider directly to get a replacement insurance card. If you've lost a Medicare card, contact the Social Security Administration to get a replacement.
8. For other miscellaneous cards, like membership cards, video rental cards and bonus club cards, you'll have to contact the individual companies directly. Use the directory on consumeraction.gov to get a direct line to consumer affairs or member relations departments.

Organizing for 2011 – Clear Clutter by Donating: From GovGab: "This is a two-part blog on getting better organized for the New Year. Part 1 was on getting paperwork organized. Part 2 is about clearing out the clutter in other areas of my home.

Last week I contemplated purchasing a flame thrower as a solution to the stacks of unnecessary paper clutter that I have in my office. I’m thinking that flame thrower may be the solution to one of my other problems - excess clutter that I have in other areas of my house.


I am a bit of a collector. I have clothes and shoes that I don’t wear; make-up, lotions, perfumes, shampoos and conditioners that haven’t even been opened; and why do I have 3 copies of “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” and 2 copies of “My Best Friend’s Wedding?” I am no organization expert. I have no special tips or wisdom to share about getting organized, but I am sensing that while the flame thrower approach
may sound tempting, it would probably be best if I could repurpose or donate much of this other clutter.


Things like clothing, shoes, linens and blankets are always things in need during times of disaster.
DisasterAssistance.gov has a “community resources” page with links to organizations that help during times of trouble. You can locate a resource in your area that would be more than willing to take your
“lightly-used” extras off your hands and, of course, there is always the Goodwill, Salvation
Army, and local churches that you can donate your items to.


How many of us have extra dishes, containers, and pots and pans in our kitchen? I know my cupboards contain cans of beans, veggies and soup that I bought to make something specific, but ended up not using at all. Off the top of my head, I can think of a several ways to clear some of this out. I can donate it to my neighbor’s daughter who has just moved out and is setting up her first apartment. I could donate some of it to my church’s kitchen or to the local food pantry organization.


With things like excess books, music, movies you may want to consider giving them to a local library or check with your local schools. Have you upgraded to a new computer, game console, games, mp3 players, or other
entertainment devices and you don’t know of anyone to give these things to? I am sure any one of the
organizations mentioned above can find a kid who would love to have this stuff.
