2011 Federal Tax Filing Season Delays: From GovGab: "It's officially 2011 tax filing season! On Friday you can begin to e-file your taxes, but changes in tax law will require some people to delay filing for a month or more.
Three tax provisions that were renewed by the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Re-authorization, and Job Creation Act Of 2010 enacted on Dec. 17 will cause the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) delays. The IRS needs to update tax programs to include these new provisions. Those who itemize on a Schedule A form, claim the Higher Education Tuition and Fee Deductions and/or claim the Educator Expense Deduction will have to wait to file.
The IRS expects that people filing with these provisions will be able to file in mid- to late February, but the agency will announce the proper time soon. The IRS recommends people who have a third party prepare their taxes consult with those organizations about the changes. Even though some of us will have to wait to file, we will have some extra time to do it. The deadline for filing taxes is generally April 15th, but it will be April 18th this year.
Will you have to delay your tax filing plans this year?"
