Matthew Ball-Boogie Woogie Pianist

6:00 PM, Monday November 10
The
Hackley Public Library is pleased to announce the next performance in
its monthly concert series. This month features Matthew Ball,
Boogie-Woogie Pianist. The Holland Sentinel says, "Matthew Ball is one
of Michigan's premier blues & boogie-woogie pianists!" With a
performance history spanning jazz fests to symphony appearances
throughout the Mid-west and Canada, as well as recent appearances on
NPR's "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition" Matthew has been
described as a "rising giant in the field."
Remarkably
Ball's start in Jazz only began in 2001 after he attended a hometown
boogie-woogie festival. He was so awestruck by the performances he saw
that night, he left his career as an attorney to become a blues &
boogie-woogie performing artist. With a lot of time, work, and effort
over the next few years Ball would reach a breakthrough in 2005 with a
career launching performance at the exclusive Arches Piano Stage in
Cincinnati where he shared the stage with some of the same musicians
that first inspired him to play back in 2001.

Orphan Train

6:00 pm, Tuesday, November 11
Did
you know 12,500 orphans from New York City and the Boston area were
placed in Michigan from 1854 to 1927. The production company spent a
year and a half in research and searching for photos of the Orphan Train
Riders in Michigan. They have produced a television documentary about
this event in Michigan’s history, depicting in great detail the
selection process and being an Orphan Train Rider.
The
first Orphan Train Riders (14 boys), arrived in Dowagiac, Michigan on a
Sunday morning in late September 1854, traveling on the Michigan
Central Railroad. By 1927, forty-three Michigan towns would also
receive orphans from the “Baby Train”, as it was sometimes called. Most
of the children came from the New York Children’s Aid Society and the
New England Home for “Little Wanderers”. Thirty nine percent were
girls, and most children were never adopted.
Learn
more about the Orphan Train when Program Source International comes to
HPL to present a program on this fascinating part of Michigan history.

Local Author-Steve LeBel

6:00 PM, Tuesday, November 25: Author Steve LeBel
Join us as we welcome local author Steve LeBel, who will talk about his new book, The Universe Builders.
“We
have all heard of the fabled perfect being, the Greek God. Well, how
about a geek god? Named Bernie, yet. Fresh with his diploma from God
School, determined but unsure, bright but without confidence, Bernie
faces the challenge of building his own universe. If only it were that
easy…
A
fascinating tale of good vs. evil and a young hero on a journey of
self-discovery in an original, humorous, fantastic wrapper.”
From Amazon reviewers:
“This
book is fantasy at its best. Perfect escapism in the world of gods.
I've always wondered how our solar system was created, and now I suspect
Bernie my have had something to do with it.”
“Steve
LeBel has done a wonderful job of bringing together a cast of
characters who not only compliment each other, but bring out the reality
and life of one another. With a clever writing style and a fascinating
story, LeBel offers readers an incredible journey into a universe of
originality and intrigue.”
About
the author: Businessmen are serious people, right? Not always. Steve
LeBel — hospital president, technology entrepreneur, algorithmic stock
trader — is definitely not serious.
Not when he writes.
Whimsy overcomes him at the word processor. Whimsy is at the core of his novel, The Universe Builders, which he tells with a unique balance of seriousness, humor, and imagination.
LeBel
lives in Muskegon, Michigan with his wife Marge, and Mindy and Dexter,
their cats. When not writing, he is busy planning his next trip,
cussing out the stock market, doing tech support for friends, or
dreaming up new Universe Builder plots.
