Alice's Ordinary People6:00 pm, Tuesday, February 14Alice's Ordinary People is a documentary DVD about Alice Tregay, an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement. Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. King to the election of Barack Obama; in fact, her great contribution in the field of politics is the thread which connects the two. A more thorough description is offered at imaginevideo.org under the tab Alice's Ordinary People.Alice was recently featured on the NPR program "The Story with Dick Gordon." Brought to the community through a generous bequest from Bess Commodore. WUVS 103.7 "The Community Station" the Beat is the media sponsor. www.thestory.org/stories/2012-08/alice-tregay-and-her-life-politics A librarian from Lakeland, Florida recently wrote: Alice's Ordinary People is officially in our library collection and the shelf for checkout. I did get a chance to see your film and I enjoyed it immensely. It underlines how important it is to do one's part, even if one thinks it's small, to effect a good change in the world at large. I found it quite inspiring... |

Yoga Nidra12:15 - 12:45 pm, Thursday, February 16Yoga nidra or yogic sleep is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping, like the "going-to-sleep" stage. It is a state in which the body is completely relaxed, and the practitioner becomes systematically and increasingly aware of the inner world by following a set of verbal instructions. This state of consciousness (yoga nidra) is different from meditation in which concentration on a single focus is required. In yoga nidra the practitioner remains in a state of light pratyahara with four of his senses internalised, that is, withdrawn, and only the hearing still connects to the instructions. The yogic goal of both paths, deep relaxation (yoga nidra) and meditation are the same, a state called samadhi.Yoga nidra is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness. In lucid dreaming, one is only, or mainly, cognizant of the dream environment, and has little or no awareness of one's actual environment. The practice of yoga relaxation has been found to reduce tension and anxiety. The autonomic symptoms of high anxiety such as headache, giddiness, chest pain, palpitations, sweating and abdominal pain respond well. It has been used to help soldiers from war cope with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yoga nidra refers to the conscious awareness of the deep sleep state, referred to as prajna in Mandukya Upanishad. Theresa Bernhardt will guide people in this practice. Please bring a yoga mat if possible (some will be available.) This is timed to be able to do on a lunch hour. |

In the Tradition Jazz Ensemble2:00 pm, Saturday, February 25In The Tradition began in Detroit in the early 1990's when 5 members of the Neal Henry Septet formed the Christopher James/Charles Hopkins Quintet. Over the years they became In the Tradition and found their calling. Through the works of In The Tradition they “seek to educate listeners around the world about the African story, and hook the culturally disenfranchised members of the 'Diaspora' back into their heritage, laying on them [the] ensemble's refined expression of African-American classical music, in as authentic a presentation as they can muster.” (Matt Ward, Detroit Jazz Magazine, 10-16-13)“This band's métier is straight-ahead Jazz, unplugged and resplendent in all its acoustic simplicity and textural earthiness, and underpinned by rhythms inspired by all parts of the far-flung reaches of the African Diaspora”...Matt Ward, Detroit Jazz Magazine, 10-16-13. Brought to the community through a generous bequest from Bess Commodore. WUVS 103.7 "The Community Station" the Beat is the media sponsor. |
