The book takes place in Africa, which is as much a character in the book as the people are. Even the climate has an impact on the story. Basically, the novel examines a year or so in the life of newlyweds Margaret and Patrick and how they cope with Africa in general, and a horrific accident in particular. The book looks at how Americans, who are used to openness in governement and the press, deal with the politics of a foreign country; how a couple works through love and forgiveness; how individuals cope with sudden death and temptation. The writing is beautiful. A very good book.
