It is set in post World War II Britain and Guernsey, and consists of a series of letters between the characters of the book. The main character, Juliet, is a writer who has been writing a series of humorous columns for a London paper which have just been collected into a book. She has been on a literary tour promoting the book and is in search of a new topic to write on. She is looking for something more serious to sink her teeth into. Out of the blue she receives a letter from a man on Guernsey who happened on a book she used to own. The two start up a correspondence and she learns that he and his friends formed a literary society as a way to stay sane during the German occupation of Guernsey. Juliet has found her topic! Through the letters she exchanges with her friends we learn about her life and her research.
