Book Review: The Elegance of the Hedgehog

Sometimes a title just begs you to read the book.  One doesn't often think of hedgehogs as elegant, so I was intrigued.

The story is about Rene, a 50-something concierge in an upscale Paris apartment building, and Paloma, a 12 year old who lives in the building.  Rene tries to keep a low profile, but her great love is learning.  She reads, goes to art museums, and generally tries to teach herself as much as she can.  Paloma is extremely smart, but she also tries to keep a low profile.  Paloma thinks that adult life is very limited, so she is planning on committing suicide on her 13th birthday.  The story is told by both Rene and Paloma, occasionally describing the same event.  They both are acutely aware of the snobbery of the people in the building.  One day, a stranger moves in and everything changes.

It is an enthralling book.
