GIRLS WHO CODEJANUARY 8, MONDAY, 5:30-6:30Hackley Public Library is excited to launch a coding club just for girls! We are an official host site for the international Girls Who Code organization. The club is open to students grade 6 and up. In the club, girls will master the basics of coding like loops, variables, functions, and conditionals to name a few.We will meet every Monday evening starting in January through the end of May.Registration is required. Ruth and Max Bloomquist6:00 pm, Monday, January 8Join Ruth and Max, Muskegon's own folk singers, for an evening of wonderful music. Ruth and Max Bloomquist have been making music together since they met in 1975 and discovered their shared love not only for each other, but for music and songs made with acoustic instruments and featuring lyrics from the heart. Ruth and Max immersed themselves in folk, bluegrass, country, singer songwriters, and other acoustic music to create a sound and style all their own. Yarnspinners6:00 PM, Tuesday, January 9Five members of the local storytelling group the Yarnspinners will delight you with an interesting array of stories. Come and enjoy the stories and learn more about becoming a storyteller. The stories are generally appropriate for teens and adults.YARNSPINNERS was founded in 1992 by the late Professional Storyteller and Educator, Nancy deVries, and former Hackley Youth Librarian and Storyteller, Allison Day. The inspiration for YARNSPINNERS came from Nancy deVries' experience with such groups in Scotland and Ireland. The YARNSPINNERS are a group of adults that meet monthly to explore the ancient art of storytelling. Participants are given opportunities to tell their stories in a supportive and encouraging environment. YARNSPINNERS also tell stories at banquets, parties, schools, libraries and festivals. BLACK HISTORY CALENDAR CONTESTJANUARY 16 - FEBRUARY 7HPL's annual calendar uses student artwork to celebrate African American achievements. Artists in grades 3 - 12 are invited to submit drawings. To enter, draw a picture from African American history and ask a trivia question about it. the best pictures and questions will be published in a free calendar which will be available throughout Muskegon.Each page in the calendar will feature a question (maybe yours) about a famous person or event. answers will be printed on the back. Don't forget to pick up an entry form! all submissions are due by Wednesday, February 7. We'll announce the winners at our Awards Ceremony on February 24. |
