We've reached the last week of Summer Reading, 27 readers (5 of whom were new) read 95 books. Over the course of the summer, 160 readers read 1137 books.
Book Reviews for September 8:
Return to Sender by Fern Michaels: Once again-the heroine "gets revenge". Another success story of a woman who makes it by ehr true grit and determination "with a little help" from her friends!
Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian: Wonderful sea-going tale about life in the British Navy during Lord Nelson's time (late 1700's early 1800's.)
Post Captain by Patrick O'Brian: Wonderful sea-going tale about life in the British Navy during the Napoleanic wars. Second of a series of 21.
Be near me by Andrew O'Hagan: Bitter sweet novel about an aging priest administering a small parish in Scotland. His attempt to befriend and mentor a pair of teen-agers ends in dsaster as he is charged with sexual assault. Good description of the student revolts of the 1960s and the protagonists part in them.
Dangerous by Diana Palmer: Another good western romance with men who respect women, strong women with personality, and a good story line.
Maverick by Diana Palmer: It's been a while since I've read Diana Palmer. I enjoyed this "quick read" with a strong smart woman as the main character and the male hero had great values and respect for women.
Distant Dreams by Judith Pella: First book in the Ribbons of Steel series. Christian historical romance about the beginnings of the railroads, recommended for those who like this genre. I sure do.
Rescue Me by Christy Reece: This is the 1st book in the series. It made me want to read the next 2.
Return to Me by Christy Reece: I like the characters in this series, they have all suffered but are committed to making a difference in the lives of other victims.
Second Chance by Christy Reece: This is the first book in this "Chance" series that I've read. I'm waiting to read the other 2. I was truly surprised at the ending.
Arctic Circle by Robert Reid: Fascinating read on the life cycle of the caribou. The book also has the underlying theme of the birth/rebirth of our inner/spiritual selves--timely topic at the caribou lands-should they be protected from oil pipe lines?
This Magic Moment by Patricia Rice: 5 star.
Mystic Guardian by Patricia Rice: 5-star.
Nine month marriage by Christine Rimmer: Hilarious, tear jerker, funny, good tub reading (bubble bath and a glass of wine.)
Wife wanted by Christine Rimmer: 5-star.
Apothecary Rose by Candace Robb: 5-star. Medieval murder mystery read in 1 sitting, that should tell you something.
Fantasy in Death by J. D. Robb: Another great read by J. D. Robb. She keeps you in suspense and the storyline doesn't get old! Looking forward to the next one.

Details of life aboard a man-of-war are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the roar of broadsides as the great ships close in battle. …More |

He befriends Mark and Lisa, rebellious local teenagers who live in a world he barely understands. Their company stirs memories of earlier happiness--his days at a Catholic school in Yorkshire, the student revolt in 1960s Oxford, and a choice he once made in the orange groves of Rome. But their friendship also ignites the suspicions and smoldering hatred of a town that resents strangers, and brings Father David to a reckoning with the gathered tensions of past and present. In this masterfully written novel, Andrew O'Hagan explores the emotional and moral contradictions of religious life in a faithless age. …More |
