Staff Picks for August

Success in school

As the dog days of summer slowly fade away and the start of school looms on the horizon, why not help your children approach the new academic year with practical advice for sure-fire success? In That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week, educational consultant Ana Homayoun focuses on "disorganized and distracted" boys, who score well on standardized tests but don't make good grates. The author outlines her special organizational system that will give preteen and teenage boys the foundation they need to get back on track. From cutting back on technological distractions to getting a good night's sleep, Homayoun's tips will help slackers climb to the top of the class.

At our staff meetings we take a few minutes to talk about the books we are reading. This is a list of recent favorites.

Here Celeste encounters danger--and love--unlike any she's ever imagined. She dodges a hungry cat and witnesses the brutality of hunting for the first time. She makes friends with a singing thrush named Cornelius, a talkative osprey named Lafayette, and Joseph, Audubon's young apprentice. All the while, Celeste is looking for a new home. Is her home in the toe of a worn boot? Nestled in Joseph's pocket? Or in the dollhouse in the attic, complete with mouse-size furniture perfect for Celeste? In the end, Celeste discovers that home is really the place deep inside her heart, where friendships live. …More

Butzer deftly uses a detailed, comic-book style to depict the Battle of Gettysburg; the national movement to create a memorial there; and the quiet day in 1863 when Lincoln delivered his galvanizing speech. Butzer uses only primary sources for the text, drawing from first-person letters and diaries, speeches, and Lincoln's own writing to unpack this series of historical events.
