Prevention Made Easy With myhealthfinder

From the USA.gov Blog:

Prevention Made Easy With myhealthfinder:
From the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion

When it comes to prevention, it can be difficult to understand what it means for each of us and the decisions we make about our health. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) developed myhealthfinder, a web-based tool, to make it easier, reliable, and ad-free.

myhealthfinder, available in both English & Spanish, can help you decide which preventive services are right for you. Preventive services include things like medical tests and vaccines that can prevent illness and keep you healthy. These services are recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Bright Futures Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children, and Adolescents.

To use myhealthfinder, visit www.healthfinder.gov. In the upper right corner, you will find myhealthfinder. Simply enter your age, sex, and pregnancy status to receive your personalized health information and resources.

Get the Facts on Diabetes

Get the Facts on Diabetes:

From the USA.gov Blog:

November is National Diabetes Month, a time to remember the victims of this disease, support those it affects, and to pledge to fight it.

In the United States, diabetes affects nearly 26 million people—more than eight percent of the population—and many more are at risk. However, diabetes can be managed or prevented.

Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or sugar, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy.

With Type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. With Type 2 diabetes, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood.

Over the years, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nerve problems, gum infections, and amputation.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 percent of diabetes cases, and it is growing. You can reduce your chance of developing Type 2 diabetes by adopting a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and consulting a medical professional about your individual needs and risk factors.

Learn more about preventing and living with diabetes and tools and medicines to help manage blood sugar.

Book Review-The Help

I'm a little late to the game with this one...
Everyone has  probably already read "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett, but if you haven't, you are missing a good book.  The story is told from the perspective of three women, 22 year old Eugenia (Skeeter), 60ish Aibileen, and 30ish Minny.  Skeeter is white, Aibileen and Minny are african-american.  Skeeter comes from a well-to-do family, Abileen and Minny are maids.  The story takes place in the early 60s in Jackson, Mississippi.  Needless to say, there are problems.
Skeeter was raised by her family's maid, who mysteriously (to Skeeter) disappeared during her senior year in college.  Her parents won't tell her why Constantine is gone, or where she is.  She has two friends,  Elizabeth and Hilly who are both married.  Skeeter's mother is at her wit's end to get Skeeter married as well.  Skeeter isn't as interested in being married as her friends.  She wants to be a writer.  She contacts a publishing house in New York and is mildly encouraged to write about something that is of personal interest.  As Skeeter watches the way her friends treat their maids, and thinks about Constantine, she realizes that the lives of the maids in Jackson interests her.  She realizes that they aren't treated very well,  but really has no clue about the injustices they are forced to endure, until she convinces some of them to tell her their stories.  At first they are very reluctant...they are not used  to speaking freely to a white woman.  They are also afraid that if it is found out that they are talking, the Klan members will retaliate.  Skeeter takes the stories and creates a book.  But how will it be received in the South, and what if people in Jackson recognize themselves?
I liked this book because it was interesting to see how the friendship between Skeeter and Minny and Abileen progressed, and how Skeeter grew into herself during the writing of the book and its aftermath.

From the celebrated imagination of Dean Koontz comes a powerful reworking of one of the classic stories of all time. If you think you know the legend, you know only half the truth. Here is the mystery, the myth, the terror, and the magic of . . .
Every city has its secrets. But none as terrible as this. He is Deucalion, a tattooed man of mysterious origin, a sleight-of-reality artist who has traveled the centuries with a secret worse than death. He arrives in New Orleans as a serial killer stalks the streets, a killer who carefully selects his victims for the humanity that is missing in himself. Deucalion's path will lead him to cool, tough police detective Carson O'Connor and her devoted partner, Michael Maddison, who are tracking the slayer but will soon discover signs of something far more terrifying: an entire race""of killers who are much more-and less-than human and, deadliest of all, their deranged, near-immortal maker: Victor Helios-once known as Frankenstein.

HPL patron: The first of 3 books bring to light a different version of the old fable, Frankenstein.  This book brings the story to present day New Orleans with a crazy Maker of 240 years old and the Monster of 200 years old still fighting for humanity.
