Preserving Family Treasures
6:00 PM, Monday, September 9: Preserving Family Treasures Webcast
Do you have grandma’s wedding gown, a tintype of a great-great uncle during the Civil War or even the family bible from the old country? Family and personal historical collections are a diary of where we come from and what is important to us. Most of these collections are stored in attics, basements or under other conditions which constantly place them in harm’s way.

Join us at 6 PM on September 9 for a live stream free presentation presented by internationally recognized preservationist and the ALA 2012 Ken Haycock Award winner Jeanne Drewes. Ms. Drewes currently serves as Chief of Binding and Collections Care in the Preservation Directorate at the Library of Congress and as Manager for the Mass Deacidification Program.

The presentation will focus on appropriate storage environments, enclosure options for varying formats, steps to mitigate damage and handling instructions. If you are a family historian or the caretaker of a small library or historical society collection this is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the very best.

This event will be held in the Julia Hackley Room at Hackley Public Library.

Macabre and fascinating, Ghosts Among Us offers true-life, haunting accounts of eerie visitations and paranormal experiences along with artistically shot black-and-white photographs of haunted sites.
The personal, firsthand reports and chilling, full-length stories are bolstered by sidebars of actual accounts of "Ghosts in the News." Each chapter explores mysterious events-events that the reader will find hard to pass off as mere coincidence.
In her quest to uncover explanations for each incident, Leslie Rule extensively researched library archives and interviewed credible witnesses, historians, renowned psychics, and parapsychologists. Throughout Ghosts Among Us, Rule's findings are mesmerizing. She writes about being raised in a haunted house. "To top that," Rule explains, "my mother¨ introduced me to a serial killer when I was fourteen." The reader is invited to skip ahead to learn about that chilling episode . . . but the pages prior to that offer their own gripping, spell-binding encounters.

By Rule, Leslie
Foreword by Rule, Ann

Hauntings-the word conjures up immediate and insatiable curiosity. Paranormal author Leslie Rule explores a new twist on this strange phenomenon when she explores brutal deaths-and subsequent hauntings-all over America in "When the Ghost Screams." No sector of the country is left untouched by these mystical happenings. The Midwest, Northeast, Southwest, and, of course, Salem, Massachusetts (to which the author has her own bizarre connection), all have unique and gruesome cases of their own ghostly incidents.
Furthermore, Leslie's hometown of Seattle, Wash., is rumored to be haunted and has a violent history of its own that is explored. Prominent theory suggests that whether homicide or accidental, a violent death may cause the soul to linger behind on earth. The author's own research leads her to believe unsolved violent deaths may be the cause of the most-observed paranormal activity. Leslie has visited each site and interviewed reliable witnesses who have actually encountered ghosts.
Accompanied by the author's own dramatic black-and-white photographs, "When the Ghost Screams" also introduces sidebar articles on notorious crimes and trials featuring ghosts. Best-selling crime author Ann Rule writes the foreword. …More

With his bestselling blend of nail-biting intensity, daring artistry, and storytelling magic, Dean Koontz returns with an emotional roller coaster of a tale filled with enough twists, turns, shocks, and surprises for ten ordinary novels. Here is the story of five days in the life of an ordinary man born to an extraordinary legacy--a story that will challenge the way you look at good and evil, life and death, and everything in between.
Jimmy Tock comes into the world on the very night his grandfather leaves it. As a violent storm rages outside the hospital, Rudy Tock spends long hours walking the corridors between the expectant fathers' waiting room and his dying father's bedside. It's a strange vigil made all the stranger when, at the very height of the storm's fury, Josef Tock suddenly sits up in bed and speaks coherently for the frist and last time since his stroke.
What he says before he dies is that there will be five dark days in the life of his grandson--five dates whose terrible events Jimmy will have to prepare himself to face. The first is to occur in his twentieth year; the second in his twent-third year; the third in his twenty-eighth; the fourth in his twenty-ninth; the fifth in his thirtieth.
Rudy is all too ready to discount his father's last words as a dying man's delusional rambling. But then he discovers that Josef also predicted the time of his grandson's birth to the minute, as well as his "exact height and weight, and the fact that Jimmy would be born with syndactyly--the unexplained anomal of fused digits--on his left foot. Suddenly the old man's predictions take on a chilling significance.
What terrifying events await Jimmy on these five dark days? What nightmares will he face? What challenges must he survive? As the novel unfolds, picking up Jimmy's story at each of these crisis points, the path he must follow will defy every expectation. And with each crisis he faces, he will move closer to a fate he could never have imagined. For who Jimmy Tock is and what he must accomplish on the five days when his world turns is a mystery as dangerous as it is wondrous--a struggle against an evil so dark and pervasive, only the most extraordinary of human spirits can shine through.
