The Shocking Case of Helmuth Schmidt, Michigan's Original Lonely Hearts Killer.
6:00 PM Tuesday, June 10: The Shocking Case of Helmuth Schmidt, Michigan's Original Lonely Hearts Killer.

A wild story about the search for a missing New Yorker in Detroit that turned into a bizarre case involving a man who used personals to dupe lonely widows, and a fascinating glimpse into the world of law and order in Detroit circa 1917-1918, where Detroit's three-man (yes, only three men back then) Homicide Bureau hunted the city's worst criminals. The book was written by Jenison-based author Tobin T. Buhk, a historical crime novelist and English teacher at Forest Hills Central Middle School. Buhk’s past work includes “True Crime in the Civil War,” “True Crime in Michigan: the State’s Most Notorious Criminal Cases,” “Cause of Death” and sequel “Skeletons in the Closet,” co-authored with Grand Rapids medical examiner Stephen Cohle.

Search for the Westmoreland
6:00 PM, Tuesday, May 27

“On December 7, 1854, the Propeller Westmoreland foundered in Lake Michigan, near Sleeping Bear Dune, killing seventeen of her crew and passengers. Seventeen crew and passengers lived, however, and landed in lifeboats on the shore of Platte Bay. Soon after the passenger steamer’s sinking, rumors began circulating of $10,000 in gold coins in her safe and 280 barrels of whiskey in her hold. For the next 150 years the Westmoreland was one of the most sought after shipwrecks in all the Great Lakes, eluding salvagers, treasure-hunters and divers alike. Join author/shipwreck hunter Ross Richardson in exploring the legend, history and discovery of Lake Michigan's treasure shipwreck”. Book Review-Defending Jacob

I keep a list of books I want to read on Goodreads.  It is a very handy way to keep track of the books you want to read but can't right away.  When I'm not sure what to read next I peruse my goodreads list to see if there is anything on it that I'm in the mood for.  I was recently on vacation and finished the book I was reading in the airport on my way to my destination.  What to do?  Well, I had my ipad with me, so I checked my goodreads list and then went to our Overdrive site to see if there were any of my "want to read" titles available.  Defending Jacob was in, so I downloaded it and was happily reading again.
Defending Jacob is about an assistant DA, Andy Barber, in a small town outside of Boston.  Life is suddenly shaken when a middle school boy in their son's class is brutally murdered.  Andy takes the case and is frustrated by the lack of evidence.  When the DA and police start to interview the kids at the school they get the feeling they are being stonewalled.  Andy suggests to one girl that she could give them information anonymously.  That evening he gets an email suggesting that the look at Facebook.  He finds that the kids are either accusing his son or trying to defend him.  One boy even states that he saw Jacob with a knife.  Andy searches Jake's room and finds a knife.
The story is told from Andy's point of view, which alternates with his testimony to a grand jury (why he is testifying is not revealed for quite a while.)
Is Jake innocent?  The book delves into how parents view their children, marriage under stress, how communities come together, or fall apart, how the criminal justice system works.  It is a fascinating story.  I had trouble putting the book down.  It is well written and tightly plotted.

Winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award for his radiant novel in stories, Mary and O'Neil, Justin Cronin has already been hailed as a writer of astonishing gifts. Now Cronin's new novel, The Summer Guest, fulfills that promise--and more. With a rare combination of emotional insight, narrative power, and lyrical grace, Cronin transforms the simple story of a dying man's last wish into a rich tapestry of family love.
On an evening in late summer, the great financier Harry Wainwright, nearing the end of his life, arrives at a rustic fishing camp in a remote area of Maine. He comes bearing two things: his wish for a day of fishing in a place that has brought him solace for thirty years, and an astonishing bequest that will forever change the lives of those around him.
From the battlefields of Italy to the turbulence of the Vietnam era, to the private battles of love and family, The Summer Guest reveals the full history of this final pilgrimage and its meaning for four people: Jordan Patterson, the haunted young man who will guide Harry on his last voyage out; the camp's owner Joe Crosby, a Vietnam draft evader who has spent a lifetime "trying to learn what it means to be brave"; Joe's wife, Lucy, the woman Harry has loved for three decades; and Joe and Lucy's daughter Kate--the spirited young woman who holds the key to the last unopened door to the past.
As their stories unfold, secrets are revealed, courage is tested, and the bonds of love are strengthened. And always center stage is the place itself--a magical, forgotten corner of New England where the longings of the human heart are mirrored in the wild beauty of the landscape.
Intimate, powerful, and profound, The Summer Guestreveals Justin Cronin as a storyteller of unique and marvelous talent. It is a book to treasure.
