WWII In their own words
6:00 PM, Thursday, September 27 “Larry Martin's World War II - In Their Own Words”is based on one man's firm dedication to bringing the stories of WWII to as many people as possible. The goal is to share with the world exactly what the heroes who fought for our freedom during the Second World War did, and to pay them tribute while educating everyone on the facts and the significance of this tragic and important event in our nation's history. Mr. Martin will be speaking specifically about Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, United States Army Air Corps. He was a Tuskegee Airman who flew 18 combat missions aboard the P-51 which was one of our finest fighter planes. He flew with the 15th Air Force out of Foggia Italy in 1944. He was shot down August 12th 1944 over Toulon France. He was put in Stalag Luft 3 (which was the same prison that the 1963 movie the Great Escape was set in.) He was in a force march out of Poland back into Germany ahead of the Russian Army. Upon arriving in the Munich area he was freed by Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army. He went to Dachau Death Camp because it was near and he had never heard of it, where he saw thousands of dead people. Mr. Martin will be able to answer questions on other WWII topics as well. His website is http://lmww2.com. Held at the USS LST 393: 560 Mart Street, Muskegon. Free and open to the public. Brought to you through the generosity of the PNC Foundation. |
