Book Review-Everything I Never Told You

Sometimes a title catches your eye-Started Early, Took my Dog, The Joy of X, All the Light we Cannot See-they almost beg to be read.  A title that recenlty piqued my interest was Everything I Never Told You. The story is about a family in the 70's.  The mom, Marilyn, was brought up by a single mother who thought women should be good cooks and homemakers.  Marilyn felt stifled by that vision and wanted to be a doctor.  The father, James, is first generation Chinese and was never quite accepted in school.  They have three children and live in a small college town where they are the only Chinese-American family.  Both parents have high hopes for their children, that the children will not be outsiders and be successful.  Nathan, the oldest, is weighed down by his father's expectations, but it is Lydia, the middle child who feels the pressure from both parents, especially her mother because she did not fulfill her dream of going to medical school.  Hannah, the third child is almost ignored by her parents, so she is able to watch the family dynamics.  At the start of the story we learn that Lydia has committed suicide.  Marilyn is sure that someone has murdered her and James is so overwhelmed with grief that he seeks comfort outside his family.  The book jumps back and forth in time so we learn the path that has led the family to this crisis. The author is very astute at dealing with the grieving process and the aftermath of a sudden death.  She tells the story from various viewpoints so the reader gets to understand where everyone is coming from.  It is a powerful story of a family dealing with a great tragedy, told with empahty.

Book Discussion 1:00 pm, Monday, November 16 The Silversides Museum is sponsoring a film and book discussion group on the topic of the Holocaust. The film will be shown at the Museum, the book discussion will take place at HPL. This month the Book is by Primo Levi, If This is a Man and the movie is “The Truce,” which will be shown at 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm at the Silversides Museum on November 18. Synopsis of the Film, “The Truce” Italian chemist turned author Primo Levi was interred at Auschwitz during WW II until 1945. Following his release, he returned to his native Turin and penned the wrenching autobiographical account of life in the concentration camp If This Is a Man. In 1962, he wrote a companion book, The Truce, a chronicle of his hellish nine-month journey from the camp to Turin. Both books are crucial entries in the history of the Holocaust. This careful adaptation of the second book took filmmaker Francesco Rosi 10 years to make. Levi's trek begins when shortly after the Germans leave, four Russian horsemen ride up and tear down the gates of Auschwitz. Levi is quickly aboard one of the first outbound trucks. Over the next few months, he goes to many different countries, and along the way he meets and is befriended by assorted fellow travelers. Through them, his appreciation of life and freedom slowly returns, but with it also comes a deep rage and an abiding guilt at having survived, a guilt that may have led Levi to suicide in 1987. Book Review-The Martian

When I was in high school I read a lot of Science Fiction:  Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein, etc.  Later, I didn't read as much in that genre, but never forgot my love of those books.  Recently when I was in a movie theater I saw a trailer for The Martian with Matt Damon.  It looked really good, so I thought I'd read the book before seeing the movie. The Martian by Andy Weir is set in the not-too-distant future.  NASA is starting to explore Mars and is sending waves of astronauts to the planet.  During the second mission a severe storm pops up and the crew is forced to leave.  Thinking one of the crew is dead, they take off.  Trying to retrieve the body would have put the whole crew at risk, so they decide to leave without the body.  As it turns out, he is not dead, only unconscious.  He was hit by flying debris that damaged his space suit so it stopped sending his vital stats, making it look to the rest of the crew like he was dead.  Mark takes in his situation and puts his training and natural problem solving skills to work. I really enjoyed this book.  The author included a lot of science, which was interesting to read.  The book was very suspenseful, too.  The story was told in the first person by Mark, and in the third person telling the story of the ground crew and the mission crew as they all worked on how to save Mark.  This would appeal to people who like Science Fiction as well as people who enjoy reading about science in general.  It kept me on the edge of my seat and reading past my bedtime!
