BLACK HISTORY CALENDAR CONTEST AND TRIVIA GAME            2:00 PM, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27 In honor or Black History Month, students will draw CALENDAR ART celebrating heroes and events in Black History with the help of local art students who can give tips on how to create the art piece of your dreams. Our trivia game will be going on during our art program for silly prizes. The contest is for students in Grades 1 - 12.  Winners will be chosen from each of the following contest catagories:  Grades 1 - 2, Grades 3 - 4, Grades 5 - 7, Grades 7 - 12.  Use the blank space on your form for your picture.  Use a black pen, marker or pencil -- no colors are allowed. Winning designs will be printed in calendars and sent to participating schools. All entries are the property of HPL.  A special prize winner will be selected for the most impressive and unique entry.

Sewing Clinic-Part 2 2:00 pm Saturday February 27 Ozetta Aaron will be back to teach a low-sew home decor class. Learn how to make a pillow, table runner, pillow case, or placemats. Participants should have a basic knowledge of sewing.  The class is limited to 10 people, so sign up ahead of time!  Bring your own duck or home decor fabric, or use fabric that will be provided.  Sewing machines will also be provided.

In the Tradition Jazz Ensemble 6:00 pm, Monday, February 29 In The Tradition began in Detroit in the early 1990's when 5 members of the Neal Henry Septet formed the Christopher James/Charles Hopkins Quintet. Over the years they became In the Tradition and found their calling. Through the works of In The Tradition they “seek to educate listeners around the world about the African story, and hook the culturally disenfranchised members of the 'Diaspora' back into their heritage, laying on them [the] ensemble's refined expression of African-American classical music, in as authentic a presentation as they can muster.” (Matt Ward, Detroit Jazz Magazine, 10-16-13) “This band's métier is straight-ahead Jazz, unplugged and resplendent in all its acoustic simplicity and textural earthiness, and underpinned by rhythms inspired by all parts of the far-flung reaches of the African Diaspora”...Matt Ward, Detroit Jazz Magazine, 10-16-13. OFF THE WALL TEEN POETRY AND ART CONTEST TUESDAY, MARCH 1st "Off the Wall" is HPL's creative writing and drawing contest for middle and high school students. Young people, grades 7 through 12, can enter poems, stories, drawings, comics, or any other original creative work. Flyers with details are available at the library. Entries are due at the library by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016. The best work will be published in HPL's "Off the Wall" booklet.
