Yolonda Lavender - Soulful Music at Hackley Public Library

~Singer/Songwriter Yolonda Lavender performed fabulously for HPL last week! Her soul-based sound gave us a generous helping of jazz, R&B, blues, Hip Hop and gospel influences. She sang for us some original songs, as well as some wonderful covers, which she gave great renditions of. We extend a huge Thank You to everyone who came for this phenomenal performance, and a grateful Thank You to Yolonda Lavender.~

Adult Summer Reading Program

June 12 - August 24

Rock out and Read this summer at Hackley Public Library! HPL's “Libraries Rock” Adult Summer Reading program has begun, and will run from June 12 through August 24. Sign up today at HPL, where you will receive a complimentary gift for signing up (complimentary gifts are limited)!
For each library book you read or listen to, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a prize. The more books you read or listen to, the better chances you have for winning!
Everyone who submits at least one entry will automatically be entered into the running for the Grand Prize, which includes four one-day tickets to the Michigan Irish Music Festival and more! We want to extend a huge Thank You to all of our sponsors, who help make our Summer Reading program possible.

'Left to Write' Creative Writing at HPL 3:30 - 4:30 PM, Wednesday, July 25 Do you enjoy creative writing? Are you inspired by innovative thoughts and ideas? Become a part of 'Left to Write', HPL’s own Creative Writing Group! Here you can share your own stories, participate in exercises, and meet other creative writers. This group will provide a low key atmosphere for writers of all experiences. Everyone is welcome, so feel free to tell your friends! Bring your own paper, and your favorite pen! FANTASTIC CHARACTERS OF HARRY POTTER TUESDAY, JULY 31, 3:00 pm Learn how to draw the amazing characters and beasts from the world of Harry Potter! Illustrator Corine Roberts will guide us step-by-step through a fun drawing class for all ability levels. This program works best for students age 6 and up. Book Buzz 3:30 - 4:30 pm Wednesday, August 1 This isn’t your standard Book Club! Book Buzz is all about talking to other book lovers about your recently read and/or favorite books. Come ready to share, discuss, and to hear what your fellow readers enjoy. This laid back atmosphere allows for great chatter and everyone is welcome! FLEA MARKET THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 10:00 - 12:00 ANNUAL KIDS' FLEA MARKET ON THE LAWN OF THE HACKLEY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. CALL 231-722-8014 TO SIGN UP. Come Sell-a-brate the beginning of August! Here's your chance to turn your old toys, books, and games into fun and a little bit of spending money. Not sure what to sell? No worries! We suggest old books, collectibles, stuffed animals, puzzles, and hand-made crafts. We also wouldn't say no to baked goods or the traditional lemonade stand. Make sure you don't charge more than 50 cents per item! Children run their own booths--adult help is recommended--and keep what they earn. The event will move to Friday, August 3 in the event of rain. Interested sellers should bring their own tables, chairs, or beach blankets to sell from as well as money to make change.

Painted Confetti Tumblers 6-7pm, Monday, August 6   Add some color to your beverage! Join us at HPL to paint a glass tumbler with confetti designs. Use different shades of one color to keep your tumbler cohesive, or choose multiple colors to make it pop! REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED, as space is limited. Art was in the air at Hackley Public Library!

We recently had two art programs at HPL!

~Rock Painting and Adult Summer Watercolors~

 

During our rock painting program, everyone painted gorgeous designs. We gave examples of Mandala designed art, as well as a lady bug; however each person could paint whatever their heart desired! :) Creativity was in full swing, as the rock artwork turned out beautifully!

 

Our Adult Summer Watercolors class was led by Muskegon artist and children's book illustrator, Lori McElrath-Eslick, who gave demonstrations and great techniques to having fun with watercolors. The colors were vibrant, and everyone had their own artistic touch! Everyone did fabulously with their pieces! Thank you SO much to all who came out for these artistic events!

Secondhand Prose has two bookshelves downstairs in the lower level hallway, as well as a bookshelf at the bottom of the stairs (to the right of the elevator)!
