Wish Upon a Star...

Did you know that there are stars painted on the ceiling of HPL's tower?

The idea of having the stars came from Charles Hackley's business partner's (Thomas Hume) sons!

The tall octagonal turret contrasts nicely with the horizontal scale of the asymmetrical building, giving it a unique aesthetic.  Additionally, Charles Hackley liked the idea of the tower, noting that it represented a beacon, lighting the pathway to knowledge.

Christmas Cookie Traditions!

"Koekje, Cooky, or Cookie?  A History of American Christmas Cookies."

Virtual Zoom Program

6pm, Tuesday, December 7

Why do the Brits call them biscuits and we call them cookies?  The answer lies in the 17th century Dutch colony of New Netherland.  But cookies have a peculiar history.  Once the purview of only the wealthy, their flavors, shapes, and textures have changed over time.

Influenced by changing technologies, household labor, slavery, social status, agricultural innovations, and immigration, cookies have become the standard American Christmastime treat.  But how did we get there?

In this illustrated lecture, food historian Sarah Wassberg Johnson will discuss the history of cookies in America, Christmas traditions through the ages, and why we eat so many cookies during the holiday season.

FREE to enjoy - please register for this virtual ZOOM program by clicking HERE.

Happy Throw-Back-Thursday!

Fun fact: the glass is sanded galley glass and is 1 3/4 of an inch thick!

Embrace Art and Music next week!

Springtime: Letting Go to Grow is a one hour virtual workshop where participants will learn about art therapy as well as experience working with art to let go of the bits and pieces that are holding us back.  Art therapy is a wonderful mental health option that requires no artistic ability and is a comfortable way to explore our thoughts and feelings that does not necessarily require verbal expression.  Please join us virtually, with Deb Czechowicz, Registered Art Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor, on May 24th to explore and grow!

You may have seen news articles on the benefits of music therapy for adults with dementia or for those who have lost their ability to speak due to traumatic brain injury.  Pretty cool, right?  But how does it work?  Presented by Audrey Stein, MSW, MT-BC, participants will learn about what music therapy looks like with a variety of populations and the neuroscience research that has led to advancements in the field.  Furthermore, participants will receive insight on how music therapy improves our physical, social, intellectual, and emotional well-being.

To register, VISIT HERE! Free to enjoy.
