Book Review: Her Fearful Symmetry

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger.

What happens to love when someone dies?  Elspeth dies at the beginning of the book leaving Robert bereft.  She has left her entire estate to the twin daughters of her twin, with the stipulation that they live in her apartment for a year before selling it, and not let their parents into the apartment.  This might not seem too unusual except for the fact that Elspeth has not seen her nieces, or her sister, for over twenty years, and she lives in London and they in Chicago.  The only person who knows why Elspeth and her twin Edie have been estranged is Edie.

Before the twins, Julia and Valentina, arrive, Robert goes to Elspeth's apartment to remove her diaries and a few keepsakes.  He feels areas of coldness occasionally and senses Elspeth's presence, but doesn't quite know what to think of it.   His friends think he is coming unhinged.  When Julia and Valentina arrive he is shocked at how much they look like Elspeth and actively avoids meeting them, although he does finally befriend them.  Julia befriends the upstairs renter, Martin, who is coping with OCD and the recent departure of his wife.  Marijke has decided she can no longer live with Martin until he does something about his OCD, and has fled to Holland.

As time goes by, Robert falls for Valentina.  and the twins notice cold areas in their apartment, and that lights start to turn on and off.  One day, there is writing in the dust.
