Folias Flute and Guitar Duo
6:00 PM, Monday, September 15: Folias Flute and Guitar Duo

American Record Guide calls the Folias Flute and Guitar Duo “daring in self written music.” Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan this unique performer/composer duo was founded in 2003 by husband and wife Carmen Maret and Andrew Bergeron. In performance, Folias combines their classical music training, their experience as tango dancers and bandleaders, their love of Astor Piazzolla and their knowledge of the jazz idiom. They have performed in concert halls, clubs and for tango events across the United States, in Europe and in Argentina. Folias’ four critically acclaimed albums on the Blue Griffin Recording label feature their work together as collaborative composers and arrangers.

Andrew Bergeron is instructor of guitar, ear training, and music theory at Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University and Aquinas College. Andrew is a founding performer and composer with the Grand Rapids Guitar Quartet which feature his new works and arrangements. Andrew received his Bachelor of Arts in Music and Philosophy from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI with a focus on guitar performance, music composition and Chinese philosophy. He received his Master of Music in composition at Michigan State University School of Music where he was recipient of the “Paul Harder Composition Scholarship.” Andrew Bergeron’s main guitar teacher was Brian Morris at Grand Valley State University. He also studied with Nicholas Goluses and Scott Tennant while at the Eastman Guitar Festival. Andrew’s main composition teachers were Charles Ruggiero and Bob Schechtman and he studied theory with Sherman Van Solkema.

Carmen Maret is an endorsed Pearl Flute artist and instructor of flute at Aquinas College. Carmen received her Bachelor of Music in flute performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and her Master of Music in flute performance from Michigan State University School of Music. She also received a second Master of Music degree in ethnomusicology at Michigan State University with a focus on Argentine tango music and dance. Carmen Maret is the founder of the Grand Rapids Tango Community. Carmen Maret’s primary teachers were Mary Posses and Richard Sherman. She attended the Eastern Music Festival in 1999 and also studied with Peter Lloyd at his summer flute seminar in St. Andrew’s, Scotland in 2000. Carmen has performed in masterclasses with William Bennett and Julia Bogorad and attended masterclasses with Carol Wincenc, James Galway, and Emmanuel Pahud. Author Talk-North of the Tension Line
6:00 pm, Tuesday, September 23: North of the Tension Line

Fiona Campbell is a newcomer to tiny Ephraim, Wisconsin. Populated with artists and summer tourists, Ephraim has just enough going on to satisfy Fiona’s city tastes, but she is fascinated and repelled by what lies at the furthest tip of the Door County peninsula: Washington Island, a place utterly removed from the hubbub of modern life.

North of the Tension Line is the first in a series following Fiona, a fierce female protagonist, and an accompanying cast of eccentric characters. At turns comic, romantic, and thought provoking, this book is part compelling romance and part-comedy-of-manners—evocative of the work of Alexander McCall Smith, Jan Karon, Miss Read, and Jane Austen. Adults and young adults alike will enjoy Fiona’s foray into the vicious politics of small town life, her encounters with a ruthless neighbor and the captain of a haunted ferry, and her eventual discovery of the peculiar spiritual renewal of life as it is north of the tension line.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
J. F. Riordan was born in New Jersey and moved first to Michigan, then Wisconsin as a child. At sixteen, after two years of high school, she went to the University of New Mexico to study voice and ultimately became a professional singer.
After years of travel, she returned to the Midwest, finished her college degree, and became certified to teach high school English. She taught for three years in the inner city before taking a position as a program officer for a foundation.
She lives in exile from Washington Island with her husband and two dogs. North of the Tension Line is her first novel.
