Book Review-The Family Fang
“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its
own way.” wrote Leo Tolstoy in Anna Karenina, and when you think about
it, a lot of novels are about these unhappy families. The Family Fang is told from the viewpoint of the children, Annie and Buster Fang. Their parents are performance artists who like to create public scenes as their art, such as having a fight with the waitstaff in a restaurant, sometimes filming the "art" so they can show it later. For their entire lives, Annie (or child A) and Buster (child B) have been part of the art, but as they grow older they realize that not everyone lives like this and perhaps they don't particularly enjoy it. As they become adults they simply refuse to participate, until one day they learn that their parents have disappeared. The book examines how parenting, or not, can affect the adult lives of children; what exactly constitutes "art"; freewill; and becoming your own person. I enjoyed the quirkiness of the story. The ending was satisfying, not something you figured out half way through the book. Altogether, this was an interesting, fun book. |

Apollo 13
By Lovell, Jim Author Kluger, Jeffrey 2006-02 - Mariner Books 9780618619580 Check Our Catalog The best-selling book that inspired the blockbuster movie "A story of courage -- in space, at NASA, and at the homes of those involved." -- Houston Chronicle A timeless tribute to the enduring American spirit, Apollo 13 tells the story of America's fifth mission to the moon, a mission that nearly ended in catastrophe in April 1970. Only fifty-five hours into the flight, disaster struck for Jim Lovell and two other astronauts after an explosion left them with a rapidly declining supply of oxygen and power. Lovell and Kluger vividly chronicle how the men were forced to abandon the main ship for the lunar module, a tiny craft designed to keep two men alive for only two days. At home, a nation watched the desperate efforts of Mission Control to bring the crew back in what many consider NASA's finest hour. "A thrilling story of a thrilling episode in the history of space exploration." -- James A. Michener, author of Space "Puts the reader in one of those [Apollo] slingshots, pulls, and lets go. What a moon shot. What a time. What a ride." -- Baltimore Sun "A tale of adventure to chill a reader's spine." -- Atlantic Monthly Jim Lovell joined NASA in 1962 and flew a total of four missions before retiring in 1973. He continues to lecture across the country, speaking about space exploration. one by the time the evening ends.

certificate good for a free canoe or kayak day trip. The use of the boats and drop-offs/pick-
ups are donated by liveries (canoe/kayak rentals) in towns across Michigan. The trip winner

for the program. Canoe/kayak livery brochures & state maps will be made available to assist
program attendees in planning river trips. For those interested, Doc will sign and sell copies
of his 5 published books on canoeing and kayaking in Michigan and Wisconsin.
