She died a hard death
6:00 pm, Tuesday, May 26
When the tugboat Lotus moved slowly up the Grand River in Ferrysburg Michigan on the evening of August 18, 1927, it was immediately apparent something was wrong. She had left the day prior towing the barge Hennepin and was returning without it. The Hennepin’s Captain Ole Hansen, who had taken refuge on the tug, shouted across to employees waiting at the Dock: “We lost here boys. She died a hard death.” Seventy nine years later Valerie van Heest and fellow directors of Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates discovered the ship that Hansen had lost in 230-feet of water off South Haven, Michigan. Through research and diving this very pristine wreck, MSRA would piece together the true account of the sinking of this ship, told through historical reenactment, and place this vessel in its proper historical content as the first self unloading steamer and one of the most significant vessels ever to sail the Great Lakes.
Valerie van Heest is a scuba diver—in fact, an inductee in the Woman Divers Hall of Fame, an underwater explorer, a museum Exhibit Designer, a documentary Film Producer, the director of Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates, dedicated to solving some of our state’s greatest maritime mysteries, and an award-winning author with six books under her belt. Thousand Letters Home
6:00 pm, Tuesday, May 19
One WWII Soldier's Story of War, Love and Life: the WWII Correspondence of Aarol W. "Bud" Irish.

Teresa Irish's presentation of "A Thousand Letters Home" took our group of veterans back in time to WWII and the life many of them experienced as members of the "Greatest Generation". Her reaction to finding and reading her father's letters and the retelling of her family's story through those letters were emotional experiences that she freely shares with her audience. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the presentation and sharing Teresa's experiences.
- J. C. Sosa, Secretary/Treasurer, MI Chapter 101st Airborne Division Association

Come hear what audiences around Michigan are raving about.

Born in Saginaw, MI, Teresa Irish is a 1984 graduate of Michigan State University. She has worked in higher education administration, the staffing industry, and most recently as a vice-president for a national home healthcare and hospice company. Five-and-a-half years after finding the letters, Teresa brought A Thousand Letters Home to print. As the book’s author, publisher and distributor, this has truly been a labor of love. The book has been printed in hardcover, softcover and e-book formats. Teresa retired in April, 2012 to devote her time to sharing the story through speaking engagements and book events. She has been featured at over 135 venues and has appeared on ABC News, NPR, Veterans’ Radio, Frontlines of Freedom, Military Author Radio, and the nationally syndicated National Defense radio show.
