The Fundamentals of FAFSA

The Fundamentals of FAFSA: From GovGab: "Picture of graduation cap and moneyIt’s been awhile (I refuse to admit how long) since I was preparing for my freshman year of college. However I do remember that January unofficially marks the beginning of the financial aid season for the next academic year (2011-2012). The key to your financial aid future is the U.S. Department of Education’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as FAFSA. The information you include on this application determines if you qualify for federal student financial aid such as grants, loans, or work study programs.

While the deadline to submit your FAFSA is June 30, each state and college may set its own financial aid deadline; some as early as February! As a general rule, aim to submit your information before the earliest of the financial aid deadlines. Even if you will receive funding from outside sources and scholarships, you should still submit a FAFSA.

You can submit your FAFSA via postal mail or complete the form online. If you plan to complete your application online, you will need to request a personal identification number (PIN) so you can complete your application and sign it electronically. Parents as well as prospective students are advised to have a PIN .

Before you complete your FAFSA, make sure you have:

  • Completed 2010 federal tax returns
  • Federal school codes for each school that you may possibly attend

Do you have any tips for making the financial aid application process easier?
