The Library Day in the Life Project is a semi-annual event coordinated by Bobbi Newman of Librarian by Day.
Twice a year librarians, library staff and library students from all
over the globe share a day (or week) in their life through blog posts,
photos, video and Twitter updates. You can learn more at the Library Day in the Life Project Wiki. #libday8
I work as a Reference Librarian at Hackley Public Library. Among my
duties are buying fiction and nonfiction (000's, 200's, 400's, 500's,
800's, and 900's) for the library; weeding the same group; Government
Documents; Adult program planning; maintaining the Library's website;
keeping up with Social Media; running the Adult Summer Reading Program;
and, as they say, other duties as assigned. My days, to say the least,
are not dull.
Here's a breakdown of how my day was spent on Tuesday:
11:00 am- Arrived at work, set up the sign that goes on the front porch with the day's events, chatted with coworkers, moved from the main building to the tech services building (we have two buildings and I work in Tech Services one day a week to catalog the Government Docs).
12:00 pm-ate lunch while writing up the Library Day in the Life post for Monday, posted it to our social media outlets
12:30 pm worked with Government Docs, checked shipping lists, looked up cataloging record for a book we received a few weeks ago. It wasn't in the database, so reported it to the vendor.
12:40 pm Social media updates and checked ref desk email account
1:00 pm Worked on book order. I work on the book order on and off all month, until the end of the month when I look over the cart and decide which books I can afford to buy. I also download the final cart and keep a list of what I bought and how much I spent in an excel spreadsheet. At the end of the month I also go through the list of books that people haven't returned and reorder those through a used book seller.
3:00 pm Moved back to the Library, prepared the room for tonight's speaker which entailed setting up the projector and putting a few books out for a display.
3:30 pm Sorted through the papers on my desk-book order info, documents, programming and filed what needed to be filed. Collected what I would need for the evening reference shift
4:00 pm Dinner
5:00 pm Reference Shift- checked reference email, downloaded some stats for our database usage, answered reference questions (looked up a book, pointed out CD collection, answered IM about Medicaid and nursing homes, looked up local notaries, transferred an email to tech services), helped the speaker get set up, updated the community calendar the library hosts, looked up the phone number of one of my presenters for a collegue.
5:50 pm Checked my email; Introduced Speaker; looked up a word for a patron, gave out 2 guest passes for the computers, looked up a DVD, updated the webpage, helped someone with printing from the Internet, gave out 2 more guest passes; found the Michigan Law Dictionary for a patron
6:55 pm Checked blogs
7:15 pm Added more events to Facebook and Chamber calendars
7:40 pm Collated surveys from program attendees
7:55 pm Checked voice mail, cleaned up work area
8:00 pm Ended day
