Room
Donoghue, Emma 2010-09 - Little Brown and Company 9780316098335 Check Our Catalog 2011 Alex Award Winner Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, "Room" is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another. Room is touted as "a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances"-and it is. I also found it to be a testament to the benefits of home schooling (first part of the book) and a quasi-treatise on the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (second half of the book). Although images were well articulated, I felt the book became tedious to read from pages 75-95, the descriptions becoming repetitive and monotonous. (Was the authortold to write a 300+ page novel, nothing less?) I also found Ma's change in behavior (part 2) emotionally jolting and depressing Jack (the 5 year old son from whose perspective the book was written) was a source of distraction, insofar as his speech. The author portrayed him as a precocious 5 year old with an impressively advanced vocabulary and superior reasoning. When the author used dialogue, however, she had Jack speaking with incorrect grammar and word usage. On the other hand, when the author used Zach's voice as the narrator, grammar and word usage were perfect. I found this quite bothersome, and it make Jack less real to me. Not recommended. Too tedious and repetitive for the most part. Incongruouse character development (Jack.) …More |
