90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death & Life
Piper, Don With Murphey, Cecil B. 2004-09 - Fleming H. Revell Company 9780800759490 Check Our Catalog Get a glimpse of heaven On the way home from a conference, Don Piper's car was crushed by a semitruck that crossed into his lane. Medical personnel said he died instantly. While his body lay lifeless inside the ruins of his car, Piper experienced the glories of heaven, awed by its beauty and music. 90 minutes after the wreck, while a minister prayed for him, Piper miraculously returned to life on earth with only the memory of inexpressible heavenly bliss. His faith in God was severely tested as he faced an uncertain and grueling recovery. Now he'd like to share his life-changing story with you. 90 Minutes in Heaven offers a glimpse into a very real dimension of God's reality. It encourages those recovering from serious injuries and those dealing with the loss of a loved one. The experience dramatically changed Piper's life, and it will change yours too. Don Piper is minister of education and single adults at the First Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas. He has appeared on Christian television and radio programs, writes a weekly newspaper column, and leads conferences and retreats in the United States and abroad. Cecil Murphey has written or coauthored ninety-one books, including his work on the autobiography of Franklin Graham, Rebel with a Cause. An uplifting and encouraging story about real trials of hardship that offer ways to serve our Lord and see the light at the end. Not well organized, though. Piper jumps all over the place, gets confused about times, and repeats parts. …More |

Bhutan: Himalayan Mountain Kingdom
Pommaret, Francoise Photographer Pommaret, Francoise Translator Booz, Elisabeth B. 2006-01 - Odyssey Publications 9789622177574 Check Our Catalog - Updated by the world's leading expert on Bhutan who has many years' experience visiting and working in this cherished kingdom - Essential facts for the visitor including what to bring, how to book, visas, customs, climate, health and money - In-depth treatment of each region of the kingdom; what to see, its history and significance - Invaluable guide to trekking and mountaineering - Special excerpts include: national symbols of Bhutan, archery and other sports, ceremonial scarves, the Dzongkha language, chortens and mandalas - Literary extracts add an historical perspective According to a quote on the back cover of this book, Travel and Leisure Magazine calls this book "The Bible of Bhutan Guidebooks." To me the most salient feature of this book is that it is written by an actual resident of Bhutan (who updates it regularly), who was also a research assistant in the Bhutan Tourism Corporation and also a research assistant in history in the Dept. of Education, Royal Government of Bhutan. Although Pommaret gives some attention to the traditional tourism fare (hotels/food/shopping), her main focus is the Bhutanese history, culture, and society, enhancing her writing with 83 beautiful color photographs. Pommaret provides little known insights into this private and proud Himalayan Kingdom, a country whose government sees preserving its culture as paramount. Since Pommaret is French and this book is a translation, there are spelling and English usage errors; nothing, however, that is terribly distracting. The book was printed in Hong Kong, which may account for why I found reading it at night, under lamp light, very diffictul insofar as the pages are extremely glossy and, thus, highly reflective, making reading difficult on the eyes. Highly recommended! …More |
